Yvan Verbesselt is the awesome Zydeco rubboard player for the local band Lagniappe. Lagniappe plays Cajun, New Orleans Jazz and Gypsy music. They have been a staple at Arnold's forever. I will always remember the day when Yvan and his wife Martine became US citizens and came to Arnold's to celebrate. With great honor I present Yvan's Top Ten List!
My Top 10 most memorable “live concert” anecdotes! (In
chronological order)
10.1977, my very first live concert: the Cajun
& Creole Music Festival in Lafayette, LA.
Discovering artists such as the Balfa Brothers, Nathan Abshire, Zachary
Richard, etc… My first reaction was to ask my wife Martine, who brought me
there: “What in the world is this
music? Where did you bring me to? Etc…”
I grew up listening strictly to Anglo-Saxon rock! Little did I know I would end up loving and playing
Cajun & Zydeco music. Definitely an
opening on a wider variety of music thanks to my wife. So, I thanked her! ... and became a drummer!
9.In 1977, about one month after my Cajun-Creole
music festival experience, I went to my very first rock concert of my life: Emerson, Lake& Palmer at the LSU Coliseum in
Baton Rouge, LA. While growing up in
Belgium and for no specific reason, I never had or taken the opportunity to
attend live concerts, even though music had always been present in my life
since I was about 10 years old. It wasn’t until I got married and started
living my/our own life…that I started to go to live concerts, therefore, this
was very memorable! ”Oh what a lucky
man, he was…”
8. Nathan Abshire, Cajun accordionist extraordinaire!...
at Festivals Acadien & Creole in Lafayette in 1978…especially when I
learned through the grapevine that he had to be “unglued” from a bar stool just
before performing,…you see…he played his best music after a few cans of
Schlitz!
7. Same year, same festival, we went out to Grant
Street dance hall in Lafayette, LA for a Zachary Richard concert. As we were dancing close to the stage, my
wife was in admiration with Zachary and especially loved his leather
pants! Come to think of it, that might
have prompted my desire to become a musician! ...never wore leather pants
though…and never will!
6. In 1979, returning to Lake Charles, LA from
a Beach Boys concert in Beaumont, TX, my wife who was tired and pregnant was
craving doughnuts! I drove her home and
went back out to get her doughnuts, only to hear her say she didn’t want them
anymore and that she was going to bed!
5. 1980, Muddy “Mississippi” Waters in Lake
Charles Louisiana, of all places! Who
would have thought to see him in a city where concerts were, and still are a
rare occurrence!
4. 1981!
The Undertones, Black Uhuru, Mink
De Ville and Roger Chapman & Shortlist live from the famous all-night
Rockpalast concert in Essen, Germany.
Actually, I wasn’t there! This was
“live” on German TV, while simultaneously broadcasted in stereo on Dutch
radio! What an experience without actually
being there! With the help of stereo
headphones, the volume control, the darkness of my apartment, and especially a
bottle of genever gin, it felt as if I had been transported over there…kinda like
a starship “Enterprise” experience!
“Beam me up, Scottie!”…except that I was in my pj’s!
3.The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The meters &
Steel Pulse, while cruising on the Mississippi river in New Orleans during Jazz
Fest in 1983. I’ll never forget that “cruise concert”; dancing, shooting
pictures with my 3 year old daughter Gini on my shoulders!
2.The Neville Brothers at the Indianapolis Jazz
Festival in 2001. My friend Chico,
Lagniappe’s fiddle player, and I, fell asleep in our lawn chairs, about 30
yards away from the stage! It was hot,
so we spent quite a bit of time by the TGIFriday’s booth, filling up on large
size Long Island ice teas!
1. In 2006, Beausoleil at Mulates, a Cajun
restaurant in New Orleans. While
listening to the band, through the back door, next to the stage, a short, thin
man came walking in and stood about 3 feet away from me and my friend Chuck
Wiggins: it was Bob Dylan! The next day,
on the Fairgrounds of Jazz Fest, I was literally standing 100yds away in a
crowd of thousands!
Our neighbor John's and his basil harvest from last fall.
2 cups fresh basil leaves
1 TBS fresh minced garlic
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
2 egg yolks
1/2 medium lemon sliced
2 TBS romano cheese
2 egg yolks
about 1/2 cup olive oil
Combine all ingredients in food processor except the oil. Yes, throw the lemons right on in there!Turn on and slowly add olive oil into processor until well blended. This will be a thick consistency.
I am serving this with pasta and chicken sausage as my lunch special. You can toss with pasta, put it in rice or mashed potatoes, serve with french fries, top a burger. The possibilities are endless!
This week I am featuring the work of French stencil artist Christian Guémy aka C215. He has a totally original style that uses stencils to mix the surreal and real in a way like no one else and I would imagine would be hard to imitate. His works tries to draw attention to those that society has forgotten about by using close up portraits of beggars, homeless, street kids and the elderly on walls throughout the world. Photos and videos below.

The Skyy Summer Luau w/ Don't Fear The Reverb
Friday, May 22, 2012 - On Saturday, June 9th the
top is being removed in the courtyard and Arnold’s is ready for an old school
summer party. At 9pm local traditional Surf Rock staples Don’t Fear the Reverb
are taking care of the music. Skyy Vodka is providing the craft cocktail drink

The name of this recipe could almost be a band playing at Arnold's.
RECIPE...
2 bass fillet, Bret and I caught last year fishing in Canada but you could use any fish you like.
2 TBS Kristen's (beloved employee) homemade pepper jam. You can buy jalapeno jam at the store or get Daisy Mae's peach jam (local) and add fresh jalapeno
2 TBS olive oil
Touch of sea salt
Rub the jam on the fish, heat olive oil in skillet and add fish. Sprinkle with a little sea salt. I cook my fillets about 3 minutes on each side.
A COOKING TIP ABOUT FISH...
A fork pressed down on white fish will tell if it is done. If it is hard, it is not done.
So with the recent yarn bombing of the courtyard here at Arnold's and with International Yarn Bombing Day coming up this Saturday, June 9. I figured I would feature the work of local Cincinnati yarn bombing divas, The Bombshells. This flirty group of ladies have been adorning Cincinnati landmarks over the last year or so with their cuddly soft, hand knit street art. They are truly a Cincinnati original. Pictures and video below.

There are 177 things to do downtown this weekend listed on DCI's Website so I don't want to hear you say you don't have anything to do!
I have listed the special menu below and Chris will list the music. Don't forget to check out the fun drink specials too! From Sangria to Mojotos to the delicious Blueberry CityFlea Martini.
THE SPECIALS...
LOCAL LOCAL SALAD… This weeks salad was a bit limited on local produce so we need to stretch it a bit to where I bought the ingredients. Local from my garden was the rosemary and sage. Madison's, Koeger Meats, Daisy Mae's and another produce store there make up where these ingredients came from. Roasted fingerling potatoes, peach jam (made local), candied ginger, red onions, shredded carrots and broccoli tossed in olive oil and baked with grilled chicken sausage. Served at room temperature over leafy greends. Sprinkled with smoked gouda and honey mustard dressing. 11.95
SPINACH ARTICHOKE DIP… WE have changed our spinach artichoke dip and are offering a smaller version of it for 2.00. Served piping hot with grilled pita. Please let us know how much you love it!
CRAZY SPICY BURGER… ½ pound burger char grilled to your liking. Topped with grilled onions, mozzarella cheese and a hot as hell sauce made of habaneros, sriracha, cayenne, roasted red peppers and mayo. If you are afraid please have your sauce put on the side. Served with French fries. 10.95
CUBAN HAM CROQUETAS SANDWICH… I am so happy to have found this recipe! Rust restaurant in Newport Ky. (one of my first jobs) use to serve (something like) these and I loved them. I did these with a spicy Cuban twist! Ham, swiss cheese, onions, and cracked pepper ground together and formed into patties. Next I coat them in pankos and pan fried. Served on a grilled hamburger with more swiss cheese, shredded lettuce, pickles and red onion. Garnished with sweet potato fries and spicy slaw. 9.95
