Dear Customers and Supporters of Bockfest,
Arnold's Beefsteak Club Dinner has moved around a bit with a few different themes. The past two years I had done a goat and pig grill out at the Tap Room. That was an awesome event and I really appreciate them letting me use that big space. Due to many things I need to move it back to Arnold's. It is the only fundraiser for Bockfest and I have always prided myself on that fundraiser taking in enough money to cover our expenses for the parade. The fundraiser is this Thursday and I understand people this year cannot make this awesome event because of weather or the day it is on or because of the cost. I am asking if you cannot make the event please consider donating any amount of money to the bockfest parade. It would be much appreciated. For as long as I can remember Tony has gotten meatballs for 20 kids every Christmas. Meatballs and sauce and that’s it. He was coming even before I owned Arnold’s (going on 16 years now). I never got his phone number and never knew his last name. I just knew he was going to be at Arnold’s. He would usually call before he came. This year he did not come. I started wondering about him even before Christmas but I did not get the call. If you are one of those kids that had Arnold’s meatballs I hope you enjoyed that tradition for so many years. Tony, wherever you may be, thanks for having Arnold’s as one of your traditions for so many years!

This week it’s about gratitude and finding it in all situations… Working with your family can, at times be very trying. Especially when we are all hard headed. Chris (my son) tells me today that the more he works with his mom and his wife (Bethany) the more he learns to say yes to whatever we want. He is good, I taught him well but he is not tricking the master. I would say, and Bethany would probably agree that Chris ends up getting what he wants most of the time. Now, while reading this and thinking how silly it is, keep in mind there are lots of decision to be made with running this restaurant/bar. We have 42 employees, so on a daily basis we deal with some employee issue, add that to the food, the drink, the music, the historic aspect, something breaking at least once a week that needs repaired or replaced and the social media. That’s a lot of decisions that need to be made by one of us. Sometimes we need to be reminded but we all get over stuff pretty quick. We hash it out and move on or like Chris says, sometimes we know we are never going to please the other and that we have to accept. So in short, we all know, acceptance leads to calmness leads to getting the job done or getting over it. For that I am grateful. We have all came a long way, for that I am grateful. We have one common interest while we are working, the best thing for Arnold’s, for that I am grateful.
So now about the apple pie. I really beef up the dessert choices over the holidays because people love to have dessert during the holidays. I always have, in Chris’s opinion, too many. So today when I gave him the menu to write he had a fit because I had 12+ desserts on there. We went to battle on it and he said I needed 5. I said I could not get rid of seven. He said which was my least favorite. I said they were all my favorites. Round and round and both holding our ground. In the end he won by saying he gave up and to keep them all. So I gave it some thought and reduced it by 3. The caramel apple crumb pie did not make the cut so below is the recipe if you want to make it yourself. I will add it to the dessert list in January. Oh, by the way, we were laughing it up five minutes later and all was forgotten, until next time!
THE PIE THAT DIDN’T MAKE THE CUT…
Make your own crust for a deep dish pie or buy Pillsbury pie crust.
· 7 apples, cored, and sliced (leave peel on)
· 3/4 cup brown sugar
· 1 teaspoon cinnamon
· 3 Tbsp butter (non-dairy for vegan, such as Earth Balance)
In heavy skillet add the apples and butter until your apples are browned (about 5 minutes on high heat) then add your sugar and cinnamon until dissolved. Pour into uncooked pie crust.
· For the crumble topping:
· 1 cup rolled oats
· 1/2 cup almond meal or flour
· 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
· pinch salt
· 4 Tbsp soft butter
· 1 tsp cinnamon
Mix all of crumble topping and add to top of apple pie
Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes or until crust and top is browned.

It seems like I am the most productive when I am the busiest. Are you that way? So I thought what better time than now, my busy season, to start writing the blog again.
I now believe things come to you when you put it out to the universe. Just in the last few months I have had people come back into my life that I haven't seen upwards of 35 years. Interesting too because they have been people that helped me though struggles in my life. It makes me wonder if we aren't always struggling with something, making that just a part of life.

his sponge full of things. He moved up
to General Manger before he left me to travel the world and then open his own
place in J Town. I will always

It reminded me of how you had to make some heavy spending decisions to meet my request to add a bottle of Jameson 12 yr old and a Laphroic Scotch. At that time, spending money on expensive liquor was not an easy thing for you to do. I am amazed at where you have taken

hahahaha Abe, I am going to copy this and send it to Chris! I told him to STOP SPENDING. The shelf is the cheap part, it is the stuff on it. And the 50 1/2 barrels you have to have sitting in the cooler now. I am writing my blog post right now and going to put this in there.
Life was really good back then but it is amazing now. I will always be grateful for the time we had together and getting to know you and Cassie

Repeal Day Party
Celebrate the 21st Amendment with Cincinnati’s Oldest Tavern
On Thursday, December 5th, Arnold’s is throwing a party in honor of the 80th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. Repeal Day presents a wonderful occasion to get together with friends and pay tribute to our constitutional rights. We will be featuring live 30’s era music from The Sidecars. Listermann Brewing Company will be tapping a one off special 1/6 barrel of Losantaville Pre-Prohibition Black Lager. New Amsterdam Gin reps will be in the building giving away free swag and we will be offering drink specials on a classic cocktails from the Golden age of the cocktail (1850-1919) . The party starts at 7 and we hope to see you there.

YOU ARE INVITED TO
ARNOLD'S 3RD ANNUAL MISFIT THANKSGIVING DINNER
Thursday November 28th at 5pm
It's odd to think this is our 3rd annual free (yes free) thanksgiving dinner at
Arnold's. It started because frankly my family had (note the word had) gotten really small. When I was growing up we had huge Thanksgiving dinners but it wasn't just family. It was friends and neighbors. The evening ended with card games and fun.
The first year at
Arnold's was awesome with many customers and friends that either had no place to go or chose to come to Arnold's instead. It was amazing the different dishes people brought and how they didn't overlap. Gail Ginther and I shared in a game of Scrabble.
Last year, which was our second
Arnold's Misfit Thanksgiving, was very heartfelt. I found myself single and knew Thanksgiving was going to be trying. Also, my son had married into a very large family. Imagine how honored I was when I found out they would be coming to Thanksgiving dinner at Arnold's. I will always be grateful to the ones that came to this dinner and made it so special for me.
Now on to this year!!!! We will once again open our doors to all! Customers, family, friends, Staff, anyone. And yes, it is free. I make the turkey, the ham, the gravy, the stuffing and my favorite family traditional dish. You bring a covered dish. I will have non-alcoholic beverages provided. You are welcome to BYOB if you would like. It isn't a day for making money. It is a day of celebration. And yes, it is free. If you have a musical instrument you would like to bring that would be great.

MPMF Thursday at Arnold's
Jim Casto with Dr. Hue (Cincinnati) 7:15
For the past few years Jim Casto and Dr. Hue have been assembling periodically to create and perform music together. Their sound is a mixture of Folk, Rock, and Country. Jim Casto is a singer-songwriter from Cincinnati, deriving much of his musical influence from time spent with songwriters a-like in Northeastern Ohio. Looking to branch out into diverse musical stylings, he enlisted the help of Dr. Hue. Dr. Hue is a Cincinnati based Rock & Roll band comprised of 3 local musicians; Drew Loftspring, Mike Donohue, and Brendan Blumer. These talented young musicians help bring depth to Casto’s songs. This collaboration is currently in the process of recording a new album.
Hickory Robot (Cincinnati) 8:15
"Hickory Robot hail from the fertile acoustic soil of Cincinnati, Ohio. The original trio of guitarist Jim Pelz, mandolinist Scott Carnder, and fiddler Lauren Schloemer came together in 2008 and by 2010 had released an album of critically-praised originals entitled Firefly. Citybeat Magazine noted the "stellar songwriting" and "impeccable musicianship". 2011 saw bassist Mike Georgin complete the quartet and a year of constant gigging that resulted in a Cincinnati Entertainment Award nomination for best Bluegrass band.
Mama's Porch Band (Cincinnati) 9:15
Mama’s Porch is a band hard to categorize, as it doesn’t quite fit into any specific genre. Female and male fronted harmonies that will melt you. Laced with elements of folk, rock, and blues, these original songs pull the user along a very eclectic and entertaining journey.
The Shilohs (Vancouver, BC) 10:30
Vancouver's The Shilohs have in short order positioned themselves as a quintessential band's band. These four guys have the songwriting talent, chops and the oddball cool to make any gig memorable. Like the late greats before them a la Big Star, The Replacements, and even Crazy Horse, they have the chameleon-like ability to meld into a scene - Their songs, which continue the cannon of classic west coast rock by weaving together an infinite number of influences, take on a life of their own before an audience as their performances become more about the communal energy transforming typical fan - band dynamics.
